Opening reception, Saturday March 31, 2-5 pm. All are welcome
Abbozzo Gallery is pleased to present our second exhibition of work
by Tom Chatfield, the well known Oakville-based painter, teacher and
mentor to fellow artists, whose love of the Canadian landscape was
so brilliantly realized in his art. Chatfield’s bold and energetic
vision of nature shared much in common with the spirit and
sensibilities the Group of Seven, whose influence he often
acknowledged. But his approach and technique were developed
independently over many years as he travelled across Ontario and
beyond in pursuit of his subject. The result was a distinctive and
profoundly Canadian body of work which blazed its own trail, and
which captured the different seasons and the many moods of the land
in an unmistakable and instantly recognizable style.
Thomas Chatfield was born in Toronto and attended Northern
Vocational High School. His art teacher at Northern recognized his
talent and encouraged him to continue his studies in Art. He
attended the Ontario College of Art in the evenings while working as
a newspaper advertising designer during the day. Following
graduation from OCA in 1945, Chatfield worked in the corporate world
for some time as an art director. In 1967, he left that world to
work as a full-time artist, which he did until his death in July,
1999. Chatfield’s first solo exhibition was in 1959 and since that
time he held more than 60 solo shows across Canada. He participated
in invitational exhibitions at Ontario House (London, UK), the
McMichael Canadian Collection (Kleinburg), McMaster Medical Centre
(Hamilton), Oakville Galleries and the O’Keefe Centre (Toronto).
In 1974, Chatfield was the subject of a CBC documentary called A Way
Out. He was a longstanding member of the Toronto Arts and Letters
Club and the Oakville Art Society and was represented for many years
by McLaren Barnes Gallery in Oakville. His work is now exhibited
exclusively at Abbozzo Gallery.
